- Antoine De Saint Exupery
To me, this is the essence of design - that it allows you to sculpt a mass of information and visuals until only the pure essential is left to convey the message. In the process of simplification, you have to dig deep and discover not only what’s there, but also what’s not there. This is where the seed of inspiration and the power of design to act as a catalyst for innovation lies.
Design also requires you to be strategically creative. It is not just about aesthetics - although this plays a paramount role - it is really about problem solving. It is about organizing information and visual content in a way that is relevant, meaningful, and purposeful. It is about communication. Frank Chimero said “people ignore design that ignores people.” This is true - design must take into account its target audience, as well as the environment it lives in. As a designer, you have to put yourself in the shoes of anyone that will be influenced by your work - and not just those of your clients - in order to design mindfully. After all, design is a responsibility… and a privilege.
